[00:00:28] Speaker B: Thank you. Good morning. Please be seated. Thank you.
Your Bibles, if you'll take those and turn, if you will, to two Timothy chapter two.
I want to read a portion of this chapter beginning with verse 15, 2 Timothy 2 and 15.
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
This next verse is extremely important. But shun profane and vain babblings, for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker in the KJV Canker. But a modern, more modern translation might better read Gangrene.
And their word will eat as doth a canker, of whom is Hamenaeus and Philetus, who concerning the truth of aired, saying that the resurrection is past already and overthrow the faith of some.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure. We're going to just stop right there. Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure. If you'll put your hands on your Bible and let's pray together.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for this morning. Thank you for your presence, your power and the witness of your spirit among us.
Illumine our hearts and minds. Open us up, O Lord, speak to us deep within, deep within that when we leave here today, we will say, surely the Lord has spoken unto us.
In the mighty name of Jesus, the strong son of God. Amen. Amen. And amen.
When I graduated from college, I graduated University of Maryland, 1970, and my wife and I had been married. We were married all through college. We got married right out of high school. We were young, broke, childless couple, just taking every job imaginable that was legal and ethical just to pay our way through. My family was poor. My wife's family was angry. And so between poor and angry, we had to pay our way through everything, college, everything.
And so when I graduated from University of Maryland, we came to. We went to Atlanta for me to go to graduate school. I was preparing to become a United Methodist minister, which I was for 20 years until we grew weary of each other.
And my first year in seminary.
A master's degree is an expensive operation and I took every job imaginable. I had a job for a while at a ymca. And the director of the YMCA called me and said, there's an inner city football team that needs a coach. I played quarterback in high school and had coached a little bit on through college. And he said, would you. They've had to fire their coach for certain reasons and they don't have time to find one before the first game. Would you go and be the coach? And I said yes. I would have said yes basically to driving the bus or anything else.
And so I went. It was a phenomenal year in my life.
One cherishes the myth that one has made an impact on young people's lives.
I doubt that any of them remember me or, or my name or that I made any indelible impression on any of them, but I have never forgotten them.
It was an inner city school, an inner city football team. They were wonderfully talented and magnificently capable athletes.
I wouldn't say that discipline was our strong suit, but, but they were, they were a fun team to coach.
One of their favorite activities, however, was trash talking.
And they were, they were capable at, at a world class level.
And particularly a quarterback whose name was Marcus. He was bright and sharp and a good athlete. Probably could have played any position on the team.
And one day I was in the little sort of broom closet that passed as a, as a coach's office and I realized there was a ring of players all with their uniforms on and their helmets on and everything like that. In the middle were two other players. Marcus the quarterback and a massive interior lineman that we all called Romeo. I actually don't know what his real name was.
The word Romeo was to mock him. He was not exactly capable with girls and so they called him Romeo. Romeo and Marcus were in the middle of this ring of players and Marcus was pouring trash talk onto Romeo like acid.
And this massive lineman was standing there. Everybody in the group had their helmet on except for Romeo.
They were all ready to go on the field. Romeo was in his uniform, but his helmet lay on a bench beside him. And so I could see his face clearly. He was getting angrier and angrier every time he tried to open his mouth to get into this trash talking competition. Marcus would beat him to the punch. And it was clever and funny and everybody was laughing. But I could see Romeo's steam level rising. And I raced out of my office there to try to save my quarterback's life because he did not have a clear understanding of what was happening in that lineman.
Just before I got there, Romeo reached over and put his massive paw through the face mask of that helmet and swung it at an arch defined by the length of his arm and right against Marcus's helmet, the thwack of those two helmets. It sounded like he had broken both helmets. And he stretched Marcus, the quarterback, like a carpet, right on the dingy floor of our locker room, just unconscious. And he stood over him and he said, oh, yeah.
And I felt for a person with a limited vocabulary and limited intelligence that actually Romeo had held up his end of the argument very well.
Since that day, I have longed for such a word.
I've longed for something to say to Satan and all of his minions, something to say to the world, the flesh and the devil. When all of my arguments and all of my intelligence and all of my education and everything else is, proves to be futile in the face of the marshaled forces of demonic evil, I've longed for some word that I could say, and 2 Timothy gave it to me. And it is nevertheless.
Nevertheless.
Nevertheless is a, is a bridge word.
It stands between two propositions, both of which may be true. Proposition A, nevertheless, proposition B.
What it says, is this thing true or false? Whatever it is, this thing can never make this thing any less.
That thing has no power to diminish, weaken, change, alter. This will never be less. It will never be changed. That has no power to change this.
Paul the apostle uses this in. In the passage we just read.
It is also used throughout the Bible 97 times. You'll be relieved to know we're not going to deal with all those this morning, but it is used 97 times. The first time it's used is in the book of Exodus. The last time it's used is in the book of Revelation. So nevertheless spans basically the entire Bible.
And here Paul uses it in a. In a powerful way. And we're just going to look at a few places in Scripture where it's used. Now, let's start with this one.
Paul speaks of two men, Emas and Philetus, and that their kakamami theology that the resurrection has already happened in is beginning to weaken the faith of some.
And he talks about them and calls them out by name, and he says they teach this and they're. They sound so smart when they do it. Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth. Sure.
I just want to. We're going to do a lot of almost audience participation this morning. So let's start with this. Everybody that's under the age of 25, will you raise your hand this morning?
Raise your hand.
Listen. Listen to Dr. Mark. I've got a word for you this morning. You need to hear me on this. If you don't hear anything else all morning, will you hear this?
In school, in college, in graduate school, in life, you're going to encounter leaders, politicians, educators who have trained themselves, they have sharpened their instruments to a razor's edge for one purpose. Not to educate you, not to help you, not to empower you, but to gut your faith.
And you're going to have to be ready for them. And they're going to this, you got to hear this. They're going to look smart and intelligent and suave and sophisticated. God.
God is not intimidated by their intelligence or their education or their clever arguments any more than St. Paul was intimidated by Hymenaeus and Philetus.
He called them out by name.
Look, there are kakamamie politicians who claim to have theological educations that are uttering out and out blasphemy, Blasphemy.
And it's. And we have to understand, no matter how smart they sound, no matter how clever they look, there are seminary professors that think they're so smart and so called educators. And the fact of the matter is everything they teach cannot in any way diminish touch or and one not cannot chip off 1 millimeter off of the sure foundation of God. Nevertheless, this standeth short.
I talked to you about going to seminary in Atlanta at Emory University, Candler School of Theology. It was admittedly liberal seminary. It was phenomenally liberal when I was there back in the 70s. I can't even imagine how blasphemous it is now. But I had an Old Testament professor who was an atheist. He was straight out atheist. He loved announcing it on the first day of class.
And he imagined having an Old Testament professor at a theological seminary who was a self professed atheist. Well, I had one boy in the class, the rest of us just kind of kept our heads down. But one boy in the class, his name was Hugh, he duked it out with Dr. Bohr every day. No matter what he said, they'd argue. Finally, the rest of us in the class just became spectators at a tennis match. We just watched them back and forth. And finally one day Dr. Bohrs was talking about the passage through the Red Sea.
And he's. And he said that this so called miracle of God parting the Red Sea and walking through on dry land, he said it's because of a mistranslation.
He said it should be translated the sea of reeds. And he said the sea of reeds is a shallow swamp only a couple of three feet deep at any point.
So they were able to make their way through the swamp to escape the Egyptian army. And he said, but it didn't part like the Red Sea. And Hugh raised his hand, and we all wanted to see what he'd say. He said, Dr. Boris, you have helped me this morning.
He said, you have built my faith. He said, I know we've argued in here, but I want to tell you something. I'm grateful today because today you have built my faith like nothing I've ever met. Dr. Bohr said, what are you talking about? He said, think about it. Only God could drown the Egyptian army in three feet of water.
There's going to always be somebody like Hamina and Philetus who think they are cleverer than the word of God, who will change the word of God, torture the word of God and say things that are out, out and out, blasphemy that may speak of all kinds of things, project on God and on Scripture, things that are not there.
And we have to be able to say, we may not look, we may not be the cleverest people in the world and the most educated or the most. We may not be able to compete with celebrities who think they're smart or politicians who think they're theologians, all of that kind of thing. We. We may not have the words to say, but when they get finished with all that they say, they'll say, now, what do you say to that? Say one word.
Nevertheless.
The foundation of God standeth sure.

[00:15:25] Speaker B: there's another place where the word nevertheless is used.
And it's very meaningful to me. And I think it's at an even more practical level. In Luke, chapter five, Jesus is on the sea of edge of the Sea of Galilee. And the crowd is so big that he. He turns to Simon Peter and he says, let me. Let me preach from your boat so that the people won't press me into the lake. And so he gets into Simon Peter's boat and it says, they push out away from the Land. And he preaches.
And then after he finishes, he turns to Simon Peter. He says, now let down your nets for a draft.
And Simon Peter says, lord, you're from Nazareth.
It's landlocked.
You're a carpenter.
I'm a professional fisherman. I know this job.
I understand the work. We only fish at night. We fished all night. We haven't caught anything. Now it's daytime. We're definitely not going to. He explains the whole thing to Jesus. Am I the only one that's ever explained stuff to God?
God has given me orders, marching orders. And I have said many times, lord, I can appreciate your point of view on this, but there may be some things that you, being almighty God, may not have understood.
And so he says all of these things, all of these objections. And then he says, nevertheless, at thy word, I will let down the nets for a draft. This is very, very important.
Immediate, unquestioned obedience is the best way. Yes, that's the best way. Immediate, unquestioned obedience to the word of God. As clearly as you can understand it. That's the best way. Having said that, I do want to say to you, the rest of us, despite all of our objections, all of our arguments with God, it doesn't prohibit the power of God to bless that. When we finally obey to the best of our ability, this is wonderfully practical. So when God says to you, I want you to forgive your brother in law, then you say, oh, God, you don't know. You don't know what an idiot he is.
You don't know what he did to me. Oh, you don't know this. And you, God. God can take all that. This is wonderful to know.
Go ahead, it's okay. Explain it to God.
When you're all finished and the air's out of the balloon, then you say, nevertheless, I will forgive the idiot.
When I first began in mission work, I had no intention of being involved in mission work.
I had preached twice in Mexico, which is really just South Texas. And I'd never really been, never really been overseas preaching anywhere, had no interest in going overseas.
And when the Lord began to impress on me to go to Ghana, 1981, Ghana was in horrible shape. 1981, there was a communist military dictator there named J.J. rawlings. He was very violent, a very, very bad hombre. He called himself Chairman Rawlings, after Chairman Mao. He was a Maoist military dictator and a murderer. And God said, I want you to go to Ghana.
I want you to know.
I explained this to God many times, what I would love to tell you Is that the minute I heard God say that, that I just got a plane ticket and went to Ghana. I would love to tell you that that would be a bald faced lie, but I would love to tell you that instead I argued with God. I made objections, I gave alternative plans.
I said, no, Lord, Kenya, Kenya is good. It's on the same continent.
For nine months.
For nine months I argued with God. I explained things to him. He didn't understand our United States state, the United States State Department had put out a statement saying no American should go to Ghana and if you go, we will not be responsible.
I said, God, you, you probably didn't know that and, but when it was all over, when it was all over, my objections just, it just came more and more and more and more. I, I finally, I said, I'll talk to my wife.
My wife loves me. I don't think she wants me killed.
So I went to my wife and I said, look, I'm, I'm considering to just, I've done all these objections. I'm just going to buy a ticket and go, just get off of the plane. I don't know anybody, I don't know anything. I'm going to just get off the plane in the airport in Accra, Ghana and see what happens. She said, oh, you should do that.
So I went to my pastor, I said, pastor Lawrence, I'm considering doing this. He said, go. He said, you should do it. I said, what if I stand there, nothing happens? He said, fine, then it's on God. He said, it'll get God off of your back.
He said, put the responsibility on God. Just go, just do it. Well, I said, my wife and my pastor obviously care nothing for me.
But there's one person, there's one person that I know cares for me. I went to my mother and I knew my mother would say, oh, Mark, no, don't. She said, oh, this is the Lord.
What I'd like to say to you is that having those three confirmations, that I instantly went and bought the ticket, but that also would be a lie.
I can't tell you how I struggled.
It wasn't just the fear of being killed or arrested. It was the fear of absolute embarrassing failure that I just had to come home and tell everybody. Well, I missed God stood in the airport for two weeks and nothing happened.
That probably doesn't challenge you at all. But my carnality and ego and pride would be on display.
I was struggling one Sunday morning.
This is going to shock and disappoint you.
We were in The Methodist church there where we attended a little spirit filled Methodist church. And they had pew racks on the backs of the pews. Anybody remember what I'm talking about? Had hymn books, Methodist hymn books in there. And Allison and I were there, and there was a hymn book there. And sticking out of the bottom of the hymn book, there was a strip of construction paper hanging down.
And it came, in my spirit, I'm going to confirm this for you on that piece of paper.
And I turned to Allison and I said, told her that. And she said, wait a minute.
What if that piece of paper says go and hang yourself?
She said, you're gonna, you're gonna ask for a confirmation on a piece of construction paper sticking out of a Methodist hymnal.
I said, I'm telling you I've heard from God.
She said, yeah, but you've been telling me that for nine months.
And I reached over and pulled that out. You can believe this or not, I pulled that piece of paper out of that hymnbook and it was written in a child's purple crayon on construction paper. Go, and I will be with you.
Now here's the thing. When you struggle and work and struggle and you finally come to that naked nevertheless. All right, I've made all these objections and explained to you, and I'm afraid and I don't know what I'm doing now. Nevertheless, I will obey you.
Here's the wonderful thing. God will accept that.
That's the wonderful thing. He doesn't stand in heaven and say, nope, you didn't instantly obey me. Now I'm going to let him kill you in Ghana.
So everything that we've done now on three continents, everything in Honduras and in Thailand and in Africa, all of our work, everything we've ever done, all the crusades, all the thousands of people saved, the girls redeemed in our girls homes, all of that, all of that began because one trip that hung on a single word, nevertheless. Lord, I don't like this. I don't understand it. I don't, I don't even. I don't even really have faith for it. Nevertheless, I cannot elude your word and I will finally, reluctantly obey. When Peter did that, he let down the nets for a draft.
God didn't. Jesus didn't stand in the boat and say, see, they're empty. If you'd have obeyed me an hour ago, we'd have them. The nets bulged.
Do you understand what I'm saying? When we come to the the nevertheless of obedience, God still honors his word.
And the third Is this.
Paul is preaching on Mars Hill in Athens in Acts, chapter 17.
It is before the Areopagus, the intelligentsia, the elite of Athenian academic and philosophical culture.
And Paul preaches and they laugh at him when he mentions the resurrection. They just mock him, they laugh at him.
And then this, this little verse.
Nevertheless, some believed when Satan does everything that he can do to block the penetrating power of the Holy Spirit and the saving grace of the word nevertheless, God can get through.
There is nobody. Listen to what I'm telling you. This is going to help somebody here this morning.
There is nobody, no matter what they've done, no matter how horrible they've been. They may be on death row at Huntsville, but I'm telling you, there is nobody that God cannot reach.
The nevertheless of faith, that God can penetrate any wall that Satan can erect to keep that power from reaching. Whether it is some kind of a sinfulness or just simply philosophical arrogance like the Areopagus and Mars Hill many years ago. I wonder if there's anybody here that can remember the Soviet empire before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
I was on an airplane coming out of the communist block and trying to get back to London.
And it was in coach class and they had five seats across, so I was on like the second seat. Then there were two girls from at that time Czechoslovakia that were sitting next to me. I spoke to them. Neither of them spoke English, so it was a long flight. And I pulled my Bible out. It had one of those covers on it that had a carved out white cross on a black cover.
And so I read my Bible for a while.
And then when I got finished, I closed the Bible. And the girl next to me reached over and ran her finger around the design of that cross like that. And she put her hand on her heart and I said. I put my hand on my heart and I said Christian.
Before she could answer me, the other girl reached over and grabbed her arms and scolded her real harsh. And they never spoke to me again. We got to the airport, a baggage claim. The other girl, the kind of angry girl went off. And that girl watched her for a minute and then she turned to me. The other one turned to me, she put her hand on her heart and she said, Christian.
And I realized that all that Satan could do to enforce the laws and rules and persecution of atheism on communist and socialist bloc. After all of that, that girl still knew the Lord and loved him. That.
That inspired me to know there's nobody that Satan can keep.
People can say no, but there's Nobody that Satan can prohibit God from reaching.
Now, I don't know who you love and care about and pray for today that Satan has begun to say to you, they'll never get saved. They can't be reached. They've gone too far. They're too deep in sin. They're too lost. They're too far away. You don't even know where they are. Satan may be saying to someone here this morning, I know where they are, and I've got them in my grip. But you don't know where they are.
What do you say?
Is there an aha moment like Romeo said to Marcus?
Yes.
You look Satan right in the eye and you say, I. I know I don't know where they are. I know they're lost. I know they're in addiction. I know they're in bondage. But I've just got a word for you. Nevertheless.
Nevertheless.
This. This word is so powerful to be able to defeat those minds and those elite professors and people that want to corrupt our faith. They say, can you argue with me? No.
Do you have the. Do you have the. The apologetic arguments to defeat my philosophy? No. Are you clever enough to argue me down on the things that I say? No, I'm not. Well, what do you say then? Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure.
Himaeus and Philetus are gone.
The foundation of God stands sure.
That professor, that atheist professor that I had in seminary is gone.
But the foundation of God standeth sure.
That Soviet bloc that thought they could seal people off and keep people from knowing Christ, that could enforce intercontinental atheism, that Soviet bloc is gone.
But the foundation of God standeth sure.
There are people in my life that Satan told me would never, ever be saved.
And I have to tell you that I have seen the nevertheless of God breakthrough into lives that I said, I can't imagine that they'll ever get saved. And they are saved. I still have one.
I still have one, my brother.
I claim it. And Satan comes. Every time I pray for my brother, Satan lies to me. I've got him. God will never get him. There's nothing you can do. He's in his 80s now. He's lost. He's in bondage. He's full of hate. What do you say to that? What do you say to that?
I said, nevertheless.
Nevertheless, there are times when I've known that God was calling me to obey him. And I struggled and argued and explained it to God. And what I finally came to is, all right, God. I'm too tired to argue with you anymore.
Nevertheless, I will let down the nets for a draft, and I've seen God honor it over and over and over again.
But let me. Let me conclude with this. You've been very patient.
All of these and the 97 other times that it's mentioned in scripture actually hang on one other. Nevertheless, without this, nevertheless, this is useless.
Without this, nevertheless, all of us are doomed and damned.
And that is in the garden of Gethsemane.
Jesus is praying, facing what he's facing. This is what's important.
The horror of the cross was not a surprise to Jesus.
You have to know. He knew it all.
He could see in his mind's eye the nails going into his flesh, the crown of thorns being pressed into his forehead. He knew ahead of time that he was going to hang in naked humiliation on a cross with his mother weeping, pouring her heart out at his feet.
He knew all that. He knew the lashes. He knew everything.
And in his humanity in the garden at Gethsemane, he prayed, God, don't make me do this.
If you could take this cup from my lips, if there's any other way, take this cup from my lips. And the horror of the cross is not the only thing he saw.
Satan was showing him slideshows.
You know what he showed him our sins.
He showed him us at our most depraved worst.
And he said, you're going to die for them.
You're going to die for that lot.
Look at that thought. He just thought Satan showed him everything.
Look at the world. Look at the flesh. Look at the nightmare. Look at the wars. Look at the rapine nightmare.
Look at all these people. Look at what humanity is.
You're going to die for them.
And the whole thing hung in the balance.
The whole thing hung in the balance.
If God had answered Jesus petition to have that cup removed from him, then we're all going to hell.
Instead, heaven paused until Jesus said one more word.
Nevertheless, let thy will be done and not mine.
It was in that word.
It was in that word that the gospel was effectuated. In that lonely garden, in that moment, nevertheless, everything hung in the balance.
If God had answered the prayer before, nevertheless, we're doomed.
Instead, God waited and his son prayed that one last word.
Nevertheless.
Nevertheless.
Now here's what we're going to do in closing.
I'm going to invite you to smack the devil around a little bit. I'm tired of getting smacked around. I'm going to punch this guy's lights out this morning.
How many would like to just.
You're just sick of it. Say, I'm going to punch this sucker in the face.
So if there's somebody here that you say, I. I have a loved one that I've been praying for, and Satan has been lying to me that it's hopeless.
I'm inviting you. I want you to stand up where you are and say, nevertheless. Just say it out loud.
Good. Say it.
Let him have it. Don't wait on me. Fire at will.
Nevertheless.
Nevertheless. I'm not giving up hope. Nevertheless.
Say it out loud. Nevertheless.
Nevertheless. Nevertheless. Praise God. All right, you can be seated. Good, good.
Now, others may say, there's something. This is going to be harder. There's something. God's been speaking to me about, going, giving, doing something that he's been speaking to me about. And I have explained to him why that won't work.
And today I'm through. I'm going to say, nevertheless. From now on, I'm going to obey you. If that's you, stand up right where you are and say, nevertheless.
Good. Good. Nevertheless. Good. Wonderful. Isn't that great? Some obedience, that level of obedience unleashed in this church. You're going to see a revival, Nevertheless. And it's not all that. All the time. You should have been doing it. That won't matter. God still fills the nets. Amen. Say it out loud. Say, nevertheless. Nevertheless. I will obey the Lord. Nevertheless. Nevertheless.
You can be seated now. There are others here that would say, look, there are people that I know, even people I admire, that are just saying the same kind of cockamamie theology that Hymenaeus and Philetus said. And I know they're wrong and they've been having too much. I have a school teacher, I have a professor of someone, and I know their theology is totally wrong. And I'm tired of just sitting here and taking it. I don't have the intellectual ability to argue them out of it. I'm not an apologist, an educated apologist, but I know this one word. Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth. Sure. If you're basing your whole life, your eternity, everything, on the foundation of God, not what people teach, not even what Pastor Chris or I or anybody, even Terry himself, what we teach, it's not based on that.
Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth. Sure. If that's where you are, then you stand up and say, nevertheless. Say it out loud. Let the devil hear it.
Nevertheless. I won't be fooled anymore. Nevertheless, I won't be browbeat by some professor. Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth. Sure. Will everybody in the house please Stand, if you will, all over the house.
Now bow your head and close your eyes. And here's one last one.
If you say, Dr. Mark, I've waited and hesitated and I've just kept saying tomorrow and last, next week and next year.
But today I need to give my life to Christ.
Satan is telling me, not today, but I'm saying nevertheless, I will. Today I will give my life to Christ.
If that's you, then you just lift your hand up where you are and I want to pray with you. Good. One. Hold your hand up high. One back there. And there's another three, four, five, two on the back row way over there.
Right back there. One. That's about six or seven.
Good. Now I'm going to lead you in a prayer and I want all of you to pray it with me. If you say, I prayed this before, I promise you God will not be offended. Pray with me right out loud. Heavenly Father, I know that I've sinned.
And if I were to die right now, I deserve to go to hell.
But I believe Jesus said nevertheless that he went to the cross for me, that he suffered there for me, that he rose again for me, and that he sits at the right hand of God.
I repent of my sins and I receive him as my Savior and the Lord of my life.
Please write my name in your book.
Wash me in your blood and I receive you now as my Savior.
And I know.
Say it with faith and boldness. I know if I died right now, I will be in heaven with you.
In Jesus name.
Amen. Amen and amen. We'll magnify the Lord in the place.
Hallelujah to the Lamb.
Praise God.
